General Overview
Finca Lewis has three main buildings (not counting the caretaker house down by the front gate) and a swimming pool (one-third covered) with bar. All construction was completed in 2001.
The property is 7.5 acres and adjoins the Oro Verde Private Biological Reserve with an ocean view to the south, including the Tres Hermanas islands, and a dramatic view of primary forest mountain view to the north, the heights of which become a cloud forest through much of the green season. There are three streams on the property and two of them can be heard running to the east and west of the buildings. Sometimes you can hear the ocean surf as well. The main house is approximately 950’ above sea level and there is a nearly constant breeze flowing through the property.
The Construction:
The three main structures are of solid steel-reinforced concrete construction that have weathered the aggressive Costa Rica elements beautifully. They provide a total of 2,500 sq’ of living space, not counting the 12’x36’ second story co
vered observation deck of the main building. All ceilings, including the observation deck, are finished with beautiful masicarán wood paneling. The buildings were designed and situated for nature observation in all directions, and the wildlife—especially the hundreds of species of birds that can be seen there—is abundant.
Howler, white faced Capuchin monkeys are regular visitors to the grounds, and less often spider monkeys are seen from the house.
The main house is one-story and has two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, a large great room/kitchen, a safe room that doubles as closet and storage room, and a separate laundry room and storage room. A four-foot overhang extends around the building in addition to a 12’x36’ patio and second story covered observation deck. A dormer roof contributes to the air flow through the building and all rooms also have ceiling fans.
The one-bedroom pool guest house, located 80 meters below the main house, sleeps four, and also has a full bathroom.
The bunkhouse, located 30 meters to the east of the main house, sleeps six and also has a full bathroom, and is located over a large two-car garage.
The Grounds:
All buildings are serviced by fresh spring water that flows down from a holding tank.
The landscaping is styled "Mature Costa Rica" which is, of course, among the best on Planet Earth. All grounds around the buildings are cultured, and include various types of heliconia, which are visited by nearly 20 hummingbird species. The style of the buildings has been described as “rustic done well” and everything was thoughtfully designed for durability and ease of maintenance in the tropics.
